We do 3 things:
- We train.
- We counsel.
- We educate.
Our training curricula is the standardized Boots to Business program developed by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University. We teach it on the 11 military installations in the six state region. So far, we have trained 345 Service members.
Our Reboot training is the same as the Boots to Business training but we offer it to those who have already transitioned back to civilian life. So far, we have trained about 115 veterans and spouses.
We offer other entrepreneurial development training in collaboration with our resource partners. So far, we have trained about 866 folks in various aspects of small business ownership.
We counsel any Service member, veteran or spouse in our region who contacts us for assistance.
Because of the Federal shift in focus from counseling to training, we tend to make about as many referrals for counseling as the numbers we counsel. This shift works better for our veterans who live outside of Yellowstone County. I am finding that folks really want to look you in the eye when they are sharing personal and confidential information with you. They want to trust you and that trust is hard to build virtually.
We were caught by surprise by how much veterans don’t know. They don’t know about VBOC because we’re new, after all. But many also don’t know about the Small Business Administration and what it does, the small business development centers and what they do, or the many Chapters of SCORE and how they work, Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTACs), women’s business centers, economic development authorities, or what the chambers of commerce are useful for.
We are here to educate veterans through outreach.
